Learning Management System (iLS) Technical Overview

Article Subject:  Learning Management System (iLS) Technical Overview.

This article describes the Learning Management System (iLS) and details technical requirements for installing the application with eXpress Course™.

The Interactive Learning System is a web-based application designed to facilitate and manage many aspects of training, including publishing and tracking of online courses, and management reporting.

eXpress Course™ is a web-based course development tool integrated with the iLS and publishes courses for web delivery using Macromedia Flash®.  In addition to text and graphics, courses can contain rich media such as audio, video, and assessment interactions.

The iLS was developed using non-proprietary technologies and n-tier architecture, to ensure reliability and scalability.

Tier 1 – Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher with Flash 8.0 plug-in.

Tier 2 – IIS 5.0 or higher server with Java servlet/JSP engine integrated

Tier 3 – SQL92 compliant relational database using JDBC

The Client layer (Tier 1) display is pure HTML optimized for use in Internet Explorer 6.0 and above. JSP and COM (Tier 2) dynamically generate the HTML for the Client layer (Tier 1).   Tier 2 communicates with Tier 3 to retrieve data from the SQL92 compliant database via JDBC, formats the results, and sends the page back to Tier 1 where it is displayed for the user.
